Jang, M., Lee, E. J., Lee, S. T., Cho, M., & Lim, J. M. (2007). Preimplantation and fetal develeopment of mouse embryos cultured in a protein-free, chemically defined medium. Fertility and sterility, 87(2), 445-447. doi: 10.1016/j.fertnstert.2006.06.021 In this study, mouse two-cell embryos of block (ICR) or nonblock (F1 of C57BL x DBA) strains were cultured in modified Chatot, Ziomek, and Bavister medium, supplemented with bovine serum albumin or polyvinyl alcohol, a synthetic macromolecule. This study demonstrated that the supplementation of PVA to Bavister medium, instead of BSA, to create chemically defined, protein-free culture conditions, did not influence morula compaction and blastocyst formation, blastomere proliferation and differentiation, implantation and pregnancy and delivery outcomes, or even the expression of several genes related to pluripotency, organogenesis, and implantation. The formula of Bavister medium is listed in a former article; Chatot, C. L., Ziomek, C. A., Bavister, B. D., Lewis, J. L., & Torres, I. (1989). An improved culture medium supports development of random-bred 1-cell mouse embryos in vitro. Journal of reproduction and fertility, 86(2), 679-688.
